ArcheoMap Lab

Archeological Mapping Digital Lab

The Archeological Mapping Digital Lab promotes research, experimentation, and teaching of technologies applied to cartography and surveying. Its activities aim at the historical reconstruction of urban and rural landscapes through archaeological, topographical, and geomorphological analysis of the territory and its components.

ARCHEOMAP Lab supports Open Science and the FAIR principles (free, libre, and open source).

Methods

and Objectives

ARCHEOMAP Lab experiments with and develops technologies applied to the diachronic study of archaeological landscapes, combining field investigations with laboratory analyses. The evolution of digital technologies has profoundly transformed the way diachronic archaeological knowledge of the territory is represented, analyzed, and shared, opening new research possibilities.

The lab adopts both traditional and innovative tools and methods for documentation, analysis, and data visualization.
From the use of GIS to integrate heterogeneous archaeological data, to direct and instrumental surveys for 3D modeling of monuments through Structure from Motion (SfM) and Laser Scanning, from remote sensing to proximal sensing using in-house drones, the lab works to graphically and semantically represent archaeological heritage, from a macro to a micro scale.

New technologies applied to archaeological topography (3D GIS, machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc.) enable the integration of quantitative and qualitative data, fostering a complex and dynamic interpretation of data for the diachronic reconstruction of landscapes.

ARCHEOMAP Lab positions itself as a bridge between archaeological research and Information and Communication Technology (ICT), exploring the potential offered by tools such as GIS, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to enhance and enrich traditional research. The goal is not simply technological application, but the experimentation of new methods to understand the past and guide future scenarios in cultural heritage research within the realm of digital humanities, with a critical and conscious approach.

The lab promotes ethical innovation, founded on transparency, sharing, and reproducibility of scientific results. In line with the principles of Open Science, ARCHEOMAP Lab emphasizes the use of open-source technologies and free software to foster collaboration among researchers, students, and professionals, creating an inclusive community focused on discovering and understanding the past with a forward-looking perspective.
