Excavation Announcements! Fieldwork campaigns 2026

The application form to participate in the educational archaeological fieldwork campaigns of the Laboratory of Ancient Topography and Digital Archaeology at the University of Naples Federico II is now online!

ArcheoMapLab promotes research, experimentation, and teaching in technologies applied to mapping and surveying. Our investigations aim primarily at the historical reconstruction of urban and rural landscapes through archaeological, topographical, and geomorphological analysis of territories and all their components.

Atella (Sant’Arpino, Caserta)

From 18/05 to 13/06

Since 2023, under the direction of Prof. Rodolfo Brancato, the laboratory has been deepening the archaeological knowledge of Atella, an ancient Campanian urban center located between Neapolis and Capua.
Through field surveys, geophysical prospection, drone-based mapping, and stratigraphic excavation, we study the city’s development from the Archaic period to the Middle Ages. Since 2022, we have also contributed to the archaeological map of the territory by digitizing and integrating collected data—an innovative approach to reconstructing long-term urban history.

Olympieion of Syracuse

From 22/06 to 18/07

Since 2023, in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Syracuse, laboratory members have been studying the sanctuary of Olympian Zeus at the mouth of the Anapo River, one of the main extra-urban sanctuaries of the ancient city.
Through topographic surveys, remote sensing, geophysical prospection, and stratigraphic excavation, we investigate the monumental temple structure and its relationship with the Great Harbor and the Anapo River. A major research focus concerns the relationship between the sanctuary and the district known as Polychne, with the aim of reconstructing the archaeological topography of the site.

Southern Etruria (Viterbo)

Form 31/08 to 17/10

In collaboration with the Superintendency for the territory of Viterbo and Southern Etruria, the laboratory continues archaeological field surveys in the lower Fiora valley.
The objective is to reconstruct the route of the Via Clodia in this region, addressing the unresolved issue of the location of Materno, an ancient road station never identified with certainty.
