Atella Archaeological Project

Archaeological surveys for the ancient topography of Atella and its territory

Since 2023, the project has been led by R. Brancato under concession from the Superintendency ABAP for the provinces of Caserta and Benevento. It aims to deepen our understanding of the urban layout of Atella during the Roman period. Located in Campania, between Neapolis and Capua, Atella was a significant urban center in antiquity, undergoing multiple transitional phases from the Archaic to the Republican era, and from the Imperial Roman Age to the Early Middle Ages. The main goal is to integrate archaeo-topographical data from previous studies to analyze their relationship with the surrounding context and reconstruct the city’s long-term urban development. To achieve this, the project employs advanced research methodologies, including both invasive investigations and stratigraphic excavations. The fieldwork includes:  Surface reconnaissance, extensive geophysical prospecting, aerial reconnaissance by drone, stratigraphic excavations under the SABAP-CE BN concession in the municipality of Sant’Arpino (CE) to deepen our knowledge of the occupation phases of the site. Alongside urban investigations, the archaeological mapping project was launched in 2022 in collaboration with the Superintendency ABAP for the Metropolitan Area of Naples and the Superintendency for the provinces of Caserta and Benevento. The data collected from the field and archives will be digitized and integrated using the ICA application, ultimately merging into the GNA. https://gna.cultura.gov.it/wiki/index.php/Pagina_principale
