Medma Archaeological Project

Medma Archaeological Project

The archaeological research project, launched in 2021 as part of an agreement between the Department of Humanities and the Soprintendenza of Reggio Calabria, directed by R. Brancato and M.S. Scaravilli, focuses on the topographical study of the ancient city of Medma. Forty years after the first archaeological map project, several issues remain unresolved, such as the shape and size of the city blocks, the extent of the settlement, and the chronology of the archaeological findings, which mainly date back to the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. The aim of the project is to create a digital archaeological map of the site, combining legacy data with information from archaeological and geophysical investigations. Indeed, prospections (magnetometry) have been conducted, revealing anomalies related to buried structures, indicating the presence of significant buildings and suggesting the use of more advanced research methods, such as GPR and targeted excavations.
