The project, launched in 2023 between the Department of Humanities and the Archaeological Park of Syracuse, focuses on the study and enhancement of the archaeological site of the Olympieion of Syracuse, one of the main extra-urban sanctuaries of the Greek city. The site partially preserves the archaic temple, but much of the area remains archaeologically unknown. The project includes topographic surveying, remote sensing, geophysical prospections, and stratigraphic excavations to reconstruct the monumental structure and the environmental context of the sanctuary, which is linked to the large harbor and the Anapo River. The main goal is to deepen the understanding of the archaeological topography of the site, particularly regarding Polychne.
