Byzantine Sites in the Gaza Strip and Bethlehem
The Department of Humanities of the University of Naples Federico II presents a double event dedicated to safeguarding and cultural cooperation in fragile contexts.
The event, curated by Antonino Tranchina and Rodolfo Brancato, is part of the activities of the Master’s Degree Program in Cultural Heritage, Art History and Museology for the 2025-2026 academic year and within the cycle of Seminars on Ancient Topography and Landscape Archaeology. Through two distinct seminars, the challenges of protecting historical heritage between the ancient and the present will be explored.
The initiative, curated by Antonino Tranchina and Rodolfo Brancato, will take place on December 9, 2025, at the ‘Aula Ex Cataloghi lignei’ of the San Pietro Martire Complex.
The day’s program is divided into the following sessions:
- 15:30 – René Elter (École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jérusalem, Première Urgence Internationale) will hold the seminar titled “Comment sauver et transmettre le patrimoine en danger de Gaza: l’Initiative Intiqal”, within the History of Byzantine Art course.
- 17:30 – Gabriele Castiglia and Simone Schiavone (Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology) will present the paper “History, Archaeology and cooperation in a fragile context, between ancient and present. The case of the Shepherds’ Field in Beit Sahour near Bethlehem”, within the cycle of seminars on Ancient topography and landscape archaeology.
