Seminar on ancient topography and landscape archaeology
The Ancient Topography and Landscape Archaeology Seminars of the cycle for the academic year 2024-25 continue with a meeting dedicated to the historical and topographical reconstruction of the urban landscape of Naples. The seminar, curated by Rodolfo Brancato, aims to offer a critical reflection on the transformation of the urban fabric and the material heritage of ancient Neapolis in the contemporary city.
The seminar, held by Giuliana Boenzi and Stefano Iavarone (Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio of Naples), proposes an archaeological reading of the Neapolitan historic centre, through the analysis of urban stratifications and settlement dynamics, from an integrated perspective of field research, documentation and valorisation. The meeting will be held in field seminar mode, favouring a direct and contextualised approach to the sites of the ancient city.
The meeting place for the start of the course is Piazza Bellini, an emblematic space where the archaeological evidence of the ancient Greek city is interwoven with the modern urban landscape, offering an initial starting point for a diachronic reading of the city.
