Professor Rodolfo Brancato will explain the archaeological investigations (excavations and reconnaissance) of the Digital Archaeology and Topography Laboratory scheduled for 2025 to all those interested.
- Atella Archaeological Project. The aim of this project is to deepen the archaeological knowledge of Atella, an ancient urban centre in Campania between Neapolis and Capua. Through surface reconnaissance, geophysical prospecting, drone surveys and stratigraphic excavations, it is possible to study the evolution of the city from the Archaic Age to the Middle Ages. In addition, since 2022 AMDLab has been collaborating on the archaeological map of the territory by digitising and integrating the collected data.
- Olympieion Archaeological Project. In collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Syracuse, the Laboratory has been investigating the sanctuary of Zeus Olympios in Syracuse, one of the main extra-urban sanctuaries of the ancient city. For the past two years, topographical surveys, remote sensing, geophysical prospecting and stratigraphic excavations have been used to investigate the monumental temple structure and its relationship with the Great Harbour and the River Anapo. One of the focuses of the research is the relationship between the sanctuary and the district known as Polychne, in order to reconstruct the archaeological topography of the site.
- Survey in the Lower Fiora Valley. The AMDLab, in collaboration with the Soprintendenza per il territorio di Viterbo e dell’Etruria Meridionale, continues its archaeological surveys in the lower Fiora Valley, between Ischia di Castro, Canino and Tuscania. The aim is to reconstruct the route of the Via Clodia in this region, tackling the unresolved issue of the location of Materno, an ancient road station that has never been identified with certainty.
- Surveys in the Catania Plain. From September-October 2025, surface reconnaissance and surveys will be conducted in the Catania Plain, with a focus on the Roman villa of Castellito. The objective is to update the archaeological map of the territory, studying settlements, necropolis, viability and ancient infrastructures. Activities will include surveys, geophysical prospecting (GPR and magnetometry), pollen cores and proximal sensing, in collaboration with the Superintendency and the Catania Archaeological Park.
